No end in sight for Idaho's growth . . .

coeur d'alene resort on lake coeur d'alene

A colleague emailed me this article I am very happy to share with you.

With all due respect to Phoenix, Las Vegas and Orlando, the heart of American's biggest economic boom is right here in Idaho

In Idaho, the state with the nation's fastest-growing economy, homebuilding hasn't crashed as it has across much of the USA, and a two-decade run of prosperity continues.

Chalk it up, in large part, to chips — computer chips and potato chips. And to a state whose climate and rugged outdoor beauty are attracting highly mobile, white-collar newcomers who could work or live most anywhere.

What's less known is that Idaho has been competing with Arizona, Nevada and Florida to be the USA's most vibrant boom state. And unlike those hot-weather states, Idaho is having a boom that shows little sign of fading.

Idaho has been tops among states in economic growth since 2003. It has ranked high nearly every year since 1987, a run of good times unmatched by any other state. Even the recessions of 1991 and 2001 didn't stop growth.

No matter how often I tell people these facts, having it supported by a national article simply supports my voice.  Idaho is the place to live please come join us!!

Who's following whom? Cabela's . . . Walmart . . . Next?

I've posted before about our new Cabela's (which is scheduled to open October 19th by the way).  I've also mentioned 'unconfirmed' stores that will be popping up around Cabela's.   Well, here's another one . . . how about another Super Walmart.  We have one just 4 miles due east of Cabela's but apparently, it's too small now (I distinctly remember when it first opened that it was considered one of the largest ones in the country at that time).

Anyway, rather than pull the permits and go through the expansion, it's looking like Walmart may just build a new one and utilize the old one for . . . That's for us to find out later.

Either way - this is still good news - more jobs, more growth, more industry.

Yet another beautiful park/recreation area for Kootenai County

  • The city got five acres of developed parkland with a six-acre lake, amphitheater, children's play area, picnic area, restrooms, trailhead for the Centennial Trail and more.
  • The developer built a park in close proximity to Riverstone businesses and residences, and the Lake City Development Corporation will refund $3.2 million in park development costs to SRM over the next several years using property tax revenue generated by the Riverstone development.

Has anyone been down to the Riverstone area?  I remember just a few years ago it was a brown mill site, not buildable without a lot of clean up work.  It was barren and ugly and allowed no access or use of the river along that shoreline.

  • The park is three years in the making, with the city unanimously approving the project in 2005. Before the development, the park was an 80-foot deep gravel pit.

Today it's gorgeous.  They did an excellent job of incorporating business, residential, retail and play along with visually appealing landscaping.  It's wonderful that we get to enjoy even more of the beautiful area.

Something YOU can do to help.

Don't think you have enough time, money or skills to help those in need?  How about dropping off some food at the food bank?

Recently, the Post Falls food bank celebrated 20 years of service to the community with a party, an open house, at its 1420 E. Third Avenue location.

Today, the facility serves an average of 4,000 people from about 1,500 families each month, according to Larson.

Under Larson's guidance, the food bank started doing more than just giving food to those in need. They started getting coats for kids in the winter and school supplies for children at back-to-school time.

Take a moment and give back to your community.  It's quick and easy and anyone can afford to contribute.  No contribution is too small or too big.

Thanks Post Falls!

Another 150-200 jobs in manufacturing, coming to Post Falls or Coeur d'Alene Idaho

The Coeur d'Alene Tribe plans to build a 100,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in either Post Falls or Coeur d'Alene that will create 150 to 200 jobs that average $14 to $15 an hour.

The Tribe is expecting to break ground later this fall and plan to have the business up and running by early next year.

The Seltice Road corridor in Post Falls is the front-runner. The local workforce made this area attractive...

This is the type of business we need in this area, solid 'blue collar' jobs.  Thanks Coeur d'Alene Tribe!

North Idaho Close to Signing $500 million Military Contract

Wow.  This is awesome for our community!  The Coeur d'Alene Tribe is close to signing a military contract worth approximately $300 million to $500 million over the next five years.  Doing what?  Manufacturing giant fuel storage units for the U.S. Army.

"The military contract is expected to initially create between 50 and 70 new jobs at Berg's manufacturing plant, with many more jobs likely in the near future. The starting wage is expected to be $15 an hour, which could have an impact on other manufacturing wages in North Idaho.

"It's going to raise the whole water level in the pool," Stuck said. "Wages should go up."

Steve Griffitts, president of Jobs Plus, said the large government contract will have a ripple effect throughout the region.

"This is a huge injection for our economy," Griffitts said Thursday. "It will create greater job opportunities in our region. This will benefit the tribe for generations to come.""

This is a great opportunity and will definitely have a solid, positive, economic impact on North Idaho.

Idaho is somewhere in the middle . . .

Idaho ranks 22nd for kids' well-being

Idaho slipped two states from last year for its new ranking of 22nd in the nation in the overall well-being of children, according to the full report released today in the Kids Count data book.

The ranking is based on a variety of factors including percent of low-birthweight babies, infant mortality rates, teen death rate, teens giving birth, percent of children in single-parent families and percent of children in poverty -- income below $19,806 for a family of two adults and two children, among others.

Of course, they took this from a press release to lamenting about all of the low-paying jobs and low-paying benefits.  They talk about all kinds of different ways we can spend taxpayers money to create lots more programs that only manage to poke at the issue, rather than dealing with the issue.

George Sayler hit the nail on the head when he said "How well a child is educated before the first grade, Sayler said, "depends on the family and parents."

That doesn't take programs, that takes responsibility. Personal responsibility.  It seems we'd rather spend money than actually make parents be responsible. Sad sad sad.  Lets create dependency instead of teaching independence.

Custom Boat Builder Builds Longest Boat on Coeur d'Alene Lake

Fred Finney, a famous local (and perhaps famous outside of our community as well) has built a beautiful new boat, a houseboat, name La Dame du Lac aka The Lady of the Lake.

It's stunning and likely to be valued between 3-4 million. It looks and feels like a beautiful custom home. Fred has already used the boat for charity helping to raise $10,000 to date.

  • She’s a very elegant lady; at 100 feet long and 28 feet wide it is now the largest personal boat on Lake Coeur d'Alene.

“I truly think this is the nicest custom, I call it lake yacht, in the entire country,” Finney said.
